Few images symbolized progress in the early twentieth century quite like the railroad.
Issued in 1941 by the Bank of Communications, this vintage Chinese Five Yuan banknote celebrates two of the foundations of a modern nation: transportation and finance.
The front features a powerful steam locomotive charging down the tracks, representing the expanding rail network that connected cities, carried commerce, and helped transform China into a modern industrial economy. At a time when railroads were among the greatest engineering achievements of the age, their appearance on currency projected strength, growth, and national ambition.
The reverse depicts the impressive headquarters of the Bank of Communications in Shanghai, one of Asia's most important financial centers during the first half of the twentieth century. Together, the train and bank building tell a story of a nation investing in infrastructure, commerce, and modernization.
This note comes from a group of Chinese banknotes brought home by my father, who served in Shanghai during World War II. Many of these notes survived because departing American servicemen kept them as souvenirs after the war.
The note shows honest age and circulation wear consistent with its history and remains highly displayable. It has been mounted in a clear acrylic display frame that allows both sides to be viewed and appreciated.
