Uncle George would have turned this wooden pedestal on his lathe sometime in the late 1950's, after he and Aunt Nen retired from Gulf Oil and returned to Louisiana from Venezuela. I'm not sure what species of wood this is, but I know he shipped back a bunch of logs and timber from South America to use during his retirement. My family still uses some of the lamps he made from heart of palm, ebony, and other beautiful pieces of wood. I'm not sure of his intended use for this piece, but it would make a great stand for a 4" pillar candle if you turned it upside down. It's about 7.5" tall, and the rim measures 4.25" in diameter measured outer-edge to outer-edge... the interior is just right at 4"... not sure if a 4" pillar would slip into it or not.
