The Victorians were obsessed with dining and serving graciously at the table, and were ruled by order, so of course no Victorian housewife would allow the salt and pepper to sit apart on the table, all willy-nilly! Not when they could be exalted to ridiculous importance with a custom stand, with a handle for passing them all together- as they should be! This molded monstrosity is about 5" across, and stands 7" high at the handle. With the light shining through, it's a softer pink than it seems in the photos- almost the shade of chewed bubble gum, but shiny. The lids to the shakers are silver plate and polish to a shine, but the lid to the mustard pot is a different metal and won't polish. There is also a bit of distortion of the threaded part of the mustard pot lid, but it can't be seen when closed and doesn't affect the function. There is also a crack in the glass base, but it doesn't seem as though it has significantly weakened the structure. (See photos) Still, this is an old piece, and probably would no longer be appropriate for daily use. It has fewer imperfections than others I've seen at this price, which includes shipping in the continental US.
