Mexican folk art became popular in the 1950s due to a renewed interest in Mexican culture and identity, with prominent artists like Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo promoting its value. Americans adorned their homes with Fiesta inspired dinnerware and accessorized it accordingly. This pair of bookends, proudly labelled "Made in Mexico" also carries a shop label from "The Mexican Shop" in Washington DC, so the Mexican theme carried far from the Southwest. This sleepy couple is carved from wood and painted in their tradition clothing; even though their faces are shielded by their sizable sombreros, the detail of the garments and bodies are charming- from the tan of his arms to the hem of her skirt. They stand a little over 8" tall and sit 11" wide, back to back. The wood is cracked in her hat, either from dryness or handling, but there are no obvious signs of repair and the piece is solid.
