Aluminum Cake Domes were a regular fixture in 1950's and 60's kitchens, until they were surpassed by Tupperware in the 1970's. Momma never did make the switch, and we had birthday cakes and other Friday fresh-baked goodies stored under a dome like this until well into the 80's!
This one surpasses Mom's in a couple of ways. First, it's larger at 11-1/2" in diameter. Second, under the dome there's an unglazed ceramic disc, which I assume preserved the freshness of the cake by absorbing excess moisture?
This one's in good vintage condition, with a couple of small dings and the requisite wonky knob, which is attached firmly, if not quite straight! I can practically hear that Mixmaster whirring and smell the vanilla from the cake baking in Momma's O'Keefe and Merritt wall oven!
