Pyrex Flameware Percolators were invented in the 1930's and reached their peak of popularity in the middle of the century, when they began to be upstaged by electric percolators made of stainless steel. This 4-cup unit is fully intact with the riser stem, coffee basket, diffuser plate, lid, and handle all in perfect condition with no chips, cracks, or scratches. The only slight oddity to this piece is that this lid appears to be a somewhat different color than the rest of the pieces. It almost looks like it is coffee stained, but I don't know why only one piece would be stained. I have also washed, scrubbed, bleached, and polished to try to make the colors match, to no avail.
Percolators are a great way to make coffee on a gas stove during a power failure. Fill the pot with water and the basket with coffee, then place on the flame until it comes to a boil. As soon as the water boils and begins to rise up the tube, turn the gas to low and let it perk for 10 minutes, or to your desired strength. It also works on an electric stove, but you need a heat diffuser clip. I don't have the original, but I've included a new one.
