Pewter serveware was quite trendy in the 1970's, as the dull shine from its hammered finish added a little glimmer among the dark wood paneling and rich shag carpets of the era. It was a look that was "unmistakably Steak and Ale," as the commercial said! Soup tureens were also popular, as they made a nice centerpiece on the table or a focal point in the hutch of a room that was much more for show than it was for actual use! So here are 2 trends in one!
While there may have been some antique pewter collected by enthusiasts during the time, most of the pewter items you'd see in homes and restaurants was massed produced, and molded, rather than hammered, into the various tankards, plates, and bowls. The molds were designed to give a hammered look to the finish, and the pieces were virtually indestructible. The piece survives in excellent vintage condition, with no significant scratches or damage- not that they you would see them on the rustic finish! It's about 8-1/2" in diameter and a little over 12" measured across, handle to handle. with the lid on it stands about 10" tall. The capacity is not labeled but it looks like it would hold 2-1/3 to 3 quarts. Don't let its heft scare you off- shipping's free in the US!
