In the early 1950's, before the nationalization of fast food chains and the health concerns of high fats diets, deep-fried foods were considered a delectable treat and were generally made at home. Many homes had gas ranges, and "instant-read" thermometers were still far in the future, so the promise of an electric fryer that would "automatically" regulate the temperature of cooking oil would certainly be a welcome concept for a home cook.
Sunbeam came to the rescue with this versatile "Cooker/Fryer." It was the Crock Pot before Crock Pots, and the Instant Pot before Instant Pots- a convenient counter top appliance that could replace the old hot gas stove with automatic convenience.
Here is Model CF- the very first of such cookers brought to market by Sunbeam. This 73 year-old appliance is still going strong, because Sunbeam truly built things to last in those days. It has been completely stripped, cleaned, and reassembled to ensure every speck of dirt and grime has been removed from every nook and cranny. The lid and chrome jacket have been polished to a gleaming shine, and all electrical connections have been bench tested for safe operation. The thermostat has been regulated to some degree, but there's not a lot of accuracy to the thermomechanical mechanism that was state of the art in its day. Unlike modern digital thermostats, which has a swing of just a few degrees, the thermostat on this big daddy has a swing of about 25 degrees each direction- that's a 50 degree variance in cooking temp. It's perfectly functional- and there's little that can ever break on it- so it can last forever, but I would suggest monitoring the oil with a separate thermometer when using it to fry foods where oil temperature accuracy is highly important, and adjusting the dial as needed to control the heat. For other uses likes soups, stews, etc, it will be perfectly fine.
It's in beautiful condition and will sit in shining chrome splendor among your other mid century treasures. There is a slight dent on one side of the black bottom body panel, but it's difficult to see. See last photo.
